WHY A STRATEGY FOR SECTOR PROMOTION OF ICTs?
The construction sector presents a considerable delay in the use of information and communication technologies. In fact, according to The European e-Business Watch , the construction sector is the most delayed and that presents the lowest rates of adoption of ICT within the European Union.
As a result, the Sector of Construction presented a huge potential for improvement gained through the intensive use of ICTs in the industrialization of processes with the aim of reducing costs and increasing quality: So, in comparison with The traditional manufacturing industry, the Sector of Construction presented a 30% lower productivity, as output per hour worked. Correspondingly, at least 15% of the costs of construction are used to correct errors in work.
In fact, the existing potential for improving competitiveness in businesses in the construction industry through the use of information and communication technologies has been identified by various European Public Administrations, who are leading pioneering initiatives for promoting innovation in the Construction sector. Thus, the following initiatives:
- The "Lead Market Initiative for Europe" of the European Commission has selected the Construction Sector because of it?s tractor effect on the European economy.
- The project "Building Innovation in the European Construction Sector", within the framework of the "Europe Innova" of the European Commission
- The projects CUBE / Building Services and SARA / Construction Adding Value, promoted both by Tekes in Finland
- The initiative "Constructing Excellence in the Built Environment", developed in the UK.
Therefore, the diffusion activity carried out by the Experimental Center for the promotion of ICTs in the construction industry, will allow progress towards the goal set by the Spanish Construction Technology Platform in its vision 2030, which advocates that "The construction sector will be a technologically advanced industrial sector, managed by competitive basis, respect for the environment, security and full social acceptance"
